Self-care through video games on Nov. 6

Come play games like Gris, Tetris, and Prune, and feel better!

The inclusive gaming series Raiders of the Lost Arcade returns with the opportunity to try out a curated selection of video games, which explore diverse narratives, aspirations, and life experiences.

On Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. in the Hill Library Fishbowl Forum we will focus on games and narratives along the themes of mental health and self-care. Game titles on the docket include Sym, Tetris, Gris, Night in the Woods, Prune, Bejeweled 2, Rainy Day, Please Knock on my Door, Speech Trainer, Breath of Light, and Flower. Game platforms will include Steam, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

You will be invited to rotate through our gaming stations to discover how Libraries' resources can support leisure gaming and video game design, and to promote critical discourse for members of the gaming community.

In Prune, you remove dead branches from a tree to nurture it back to health. The meditative game features minimalist graphics that draw upon Asian ink-wash traditions and a soundtrack that evokes Buddhist singing bowls. The game is visually and aurally relaxing, while enhancing one’s attention to the logistics of getting a tree to blossom on screen.

Gris is another visually beautiful game that combines fantastic line-drawings of architectures and landscapes with bursts of watercolor washes. You play the titular girl who has lost her voice and must navigate a colorless world to put herself back together again. It’s a game about slow recovery and finding strength within. Try completing Gris without tears rolling down your cheeks!

Gamers of all interests and skill levels are encouraged to play, ask questions, and connect with each other. Snacks will be provided.

Raiders of the Lost Arcade is part of the NC State University Libraries Making Space event series.
